Our mission at Prodigy Snacks is to inspire positive change in society and the food industry. We aim to deliver sweet snacks that taste amazing, benefit the environment, have a significantly healthier nutrition profile and are accessible to all.
Humanity and the world is facing a planetary / environmental crisis. We as humans, have choices to make on how we run our lives and the impact our lives have on mother earth. The biggest impact we make on our planet is the food we choose to eat, and the truth is we impact our planet 3 times each day : Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner.
Better for you
1. Reduction in Sugar consumption
Excessive sugar consumption is one of the key contributors to obesity and related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes. The toxicity of heavily processed refined sugars is also a major issue for us here at Prodigy, and we are committed to promoting the reduction of refined sugars within the food industry. Our bars are refined sugar free and have significantly less sugar than mainstream chocolate bars – typically 50% to 65% less sugar than the average of a representative group of leading mainstream bars.
Since Prodigy bars went on sale in Jun 19, up to Oct 21 we have removed over 8 million grams or 8 Tonnes of refined sugar from our community!
2. Increasing Fibre consumption to support Gut Health
We are continuing to learn just how important your gut health is to your overall wellbeing. The digestive system is sometimes referred to as the “Second Brain”. Fibre has a vital part to play in supporting good gut health, however adults typically only consume on average 18g of fibre per day versus the recommend intake of 30g per day. Prodigy bars have significantly more fibre per bar than mainstream chocolate bars (many brands have such low fibre it is not even declared on their nutritional list). Prodigy bars typically have seven times more fibre than the average of a representative group of leading mainstream bars that reveal that information. This fibre is natural in source and prebiotic in nature supporting and promoting much improved digestive health.
Since Prodigy bars went on sale in Jun 19, up to Oct 21 we have added over 3 million grams or 3 Tonnes of fibre consumption to our community!
Better for the planet
Removal of single-use Plastic Waste
Did you know that over 1 billion* single use plastic confectionary wrappers are discarded in the UK every year! That’s almost 20 million wrappers every week that will pollute our environment and food chain for decades. Prodigy wrappers are biodegradable and compostable and are therefore a lot less harmful to the environment than the single-use plastic wrapper of a typical chocolate bar. They are certified Home and Industrial Compostable, but we do recognise that not all of our wrappers will find their way to a Compostable process. Hence, if any of these wrappers do end up in the environment, they will naturally biodegrade over time, instead of the decades of pollution caused by plastic wrappers.
We want to go further and show the industry there is a better way. So in April 2021 we announced a partnership with rePurpose Global to help counter the pollution of plastic and clear up after the big players.
For every Prodigy chocolate bar sold, we fund the removal of 10 ocean-bound plastic wrappers from the environment!
Since the start of our Plastic Negative certification up to the end of Oct 21 the combination of our plastic free wrappers and removal of 10 wrappers for each bar sold means over 2.5 Million wrappers-worth of long term plastic pollution has been saved from the environment.

Carbon / Climate Neutrality
Our products are 100% plant based and thus have a relatively low carbon footprint as compared to most mainstream chocolate brands. However, we wish to do more in limiting our impact on the environment and in Feb 2021 Prodigy signed up to work on establishing and off-setting its product-based carbon footprint, with Climate Partner.
We worked with our suppliers and Climate Partner to calculate the carbon footprint for our bars. Using a projected number of bars sold for the year ending Oct 21 we offset 200,980kg of carbon – enough for the first half a million Prodigy bars sold. Through Climate Partner we are supporting a rainforest protection project in Madre de Dios, Peru – country of origin for much of the cacao we use in our bars.
Prodigy has an Environmental Management System (EMS) policy, shared with the team and established to reduce the company’s impact on the environment and where possible to benefit the environment.
Energy – using providers supplying ‘green’ energy and initiatives to reduce energy consumption.
Water – monitoring usage and seeking to reduce usage on a per employee basis vs previous year.
Non Utilities resources – limiting printing, reusing paper, responsible disposal of any hazardous waste, recycling as much as practical, upcycling and reusing many of our cardboard boxes etc.
We’re incredibly proud to join a global community of some 7000 businesses measuring our social & environmental impact and being a catalyst for change.
These qualities have always been at the heart of our business DNA and we are thrilled that our ‘business not as usual’ approach has been recognised in this way.
Certified B Corporations® are forward thinking companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. This means giving as much consideration to our social and environmental impact as we do to our financial returns – balancing profit and purpose.
Why did we do it?
Our long-term ambition is to have a positive impact on our environment, our community, our employees, and the wider world. To be chocolate that inspires change.
Getting certified was tough to say the least (the application is rigorous). It forced us to reflect on where we are and how to do better, as joining the B Corp™ movement doesn’t just mean meeting the highest environmental and social standards, but also commits us to keeping these high standards up for the long haul.
We passionately champion causes like plastic pollution, climate change and better-for-you food choices, and there’s so much more we can and should do.
Becoming a B-Corp is just the beginning, our commitment to using business as a force for good...with our aim to making wonderful chocolate that's truly better for you and better for the planet.
