Earlier this year, we, Prodigy Snacks Ltd, launched our very own, brand spanking new Salted Caramel Chocolate Egg. A fully plant-based chocolate treat that still delivered on our Prodigy promise, no to: - refined sugars, nasties, dairy and plastic.
Our journey began in the Summer of 2021. We quickly partnered with a dynamic producer who was able to source wonderful ingredients, work to impossible deadlines, and moulded my recipe feedback into flavours that were delivered in, what felt like, a blink of an eye.
We then met an equally forward-thinking manufacturer who rose to the challenge of forming and filling our bespoke recipe for salted caramel eggs - striving to reach the perfect eggq-ualibrium of shell vs filling to create the most delicious eat. Yet, we were unable to find a retailer who could commit. Another challenge to overcome!
Using lab samples, inspired by the brilliant home kitchen experimental riot of us making hand-moulded eggs, we pitched the product to one of the UK’s leading retailers, who, took the leap in faith we all dreamed of and hoped for. They signed off product and commercials at the beginning of November 2021 for an Easter 2022 delivery. But then, in order to satisfy their own internal distribution time frames and challenges, they would need delivery of the eggs in January 2022. Time to roll up our sleeves again!
8 invigorating weeks to finalise designs for packaging, printing that packaging, supplying our precise and perfect recipe to a factory, and then beg, oh boy did we beg, for them to produce and deliver on time! This, by the way, was all in parallel with the every day responsibilities we have of marketing and selling our range of 6 Chocolate bars to our wonderfully ravenous customers!
We had to coordinate the production schedule of one producer, with the production schedule of a manufacturer to then deal with the logistics to pick up and drop off relative to our then retailers’ schedule! Oh and then there was Christmas, lockdown, and that snarled supply chain ‘issue’.
We are a small business with a bijou and a very committed team. Small enough to be agile; nimble and hungry enough to deal with the unexpected.
So, we delivered on the Easter order, albeit later than desired and, as I write this, we have 2 weeks till the Easter Weekend and, guess what? We’ve sold every one of these delicious, joyful eggs! Nice problem to have, but, oh the guilt. Nobody told me about the guilt you would feel to have such a wonderful problem that is depriving your wonderful audience. As a wise man once (nearly) said, ‘You can’t fulfill all of the people, all of the time!’. The testimonials that have come from our consumers have, I kid you not, stopped me in my tracks: created pause for me to be grateful for, my team, the patience of our retailer, and the producers and manufacturers who, ironically as it is Easter, pulled these sweet, sweet rabbits out of the darkest and deepest of bottomless hats!
But like rabbits, our egg is not just for Easter! Long may it live. It represents mountains that were, theoretically, never going to move and paths too tricky to navigate. We really want it to be a gift that keeps on giving.
We are a BCorp business, a community of change-makers. Changing the face and facets of the business. We don’t believe in business as usual.
